In February 2020 I joined Big Issue North to photograph an all female skateboarding session at Ramp City in Blackpool. Predominately a male dominated activity the girls in attendance were free to skate and coach younger girls interested in skating too.

I graduated from Northampton University in 2001. Northampton had the biggest skateboard park in Europe at that time, Radlands. Many of my contemporaries were skaters and making work about what skateboarding meant to them.

Although it is not as rare as it used to be to see girls riding skateboards, the majority of skateboarders are still male. This is commonly reflected in the skate park setting. As noted by Bradley “skate parks are predominantly “male spaces,” but, the masculinity apparent at skate parks is an “alternative masculinity” reflected in values of personal freedom, self-expression, and cooperation, rather than the more traditional masculine values of aggression, power, and competitiveness.” (Bradley)
